Mistake 1 of 2 · Not how Latvians say it

Mistake 2 of 2 · Mark over or under a letter (garumzīme, mīkstinājums)

Was: Brīvibas, correct: Brīvības

The mark over the letter (garumzīme) is missing: Brīvības.

needs fixing not how Latvians say it could be said differently

Mistake 1 of 4 · Grammar

Was: atnāc, correct: atnākt

After nevarēšu, the verb stays in its basic (dictionary) form: atnākt. The form atnāc is used to ask someone to come (“come!”).

Mistake 2 of 4 · Not how Latvians say it

Was: otpusks, correct: atvaļinājums

The word otpusks comes from the Russian «отпуск» (“leave, holiday”). In Latvian it is atvaļinājums.

Mistake 3 of 4 · Grammar

Was: Liepāja, correct: Liepāju

After uz, when it shows movement, you need the accusative case: uz Liepāju.

Mistake 4 of 4 · Mark over or under a letter (garumzīme, mīkstinājums)

Was: Visvairak, correct: Visvairāk

The mark over the letter (garumzīme) is missing: visvairāk.

Other ways to say it

You can leave this sentence as it is. Here are other ways to say it:

  • simpler, less risk of a mistakeEs mācos jūsu kursos jau trīs mēnešus.This sentence is shorter: it leaves out «latviešu valodu» (“Latvian”). It works when you want to say the same thing in the simplest words.
  • sounds more naturalJau trīs mēnešus es mācos latviešu valodu jūsu kursos.Latvians usually start this kind of sentence with the time: «jau trīs mēnešus» (“for three months already”). That way it is clear at once how long you have been learning.
  • more advanced, for level B1Es jau trīs mēnešus mācos latviešu valodu jūsu kursos, jo man tā ir vajadzīga darbā.The word «jo» (“because”) joins two thoughts in one sentence. The reason «man tā ir vajadzīga darbā» (“I need it at work”) fits if that is really true for you.

Labdien, Andra kundze!

Rakstu par dzīvokli Avotu ielā 7. Vakar virtuvē sāka tecēt krāns, un uz grīdas tagad ir ūdens. Es mēģināju to aizgriezt, bet nekas nesanāca. Arī rozete virtuvē nestrādā. Vai jūs varētu atsūtīt meistaru rīt no rīta? Es būšu mājās līdz desmitiem.

Paldies!

46 words

  • 3 mistakes

Approximate level: A2–B1 (our estimate)

  • The sentences are mostly simple and joined with «un» (“and”) and «bet» (“but”). But the story follows a clear order: what happened, what you tried, what you are asking for. This brings the letter closer to B1.
  • The past tense («sāka tecēt», “started to leak”), the future («būšu», “I will be”) and the polite «varētu» (“could you”) are all used correctly. For A2 this is a good set of forms.
  • The text has three small mistakes: no comma before «bet» (“but”), «rozetka» should be «rozete» (socket), and «mājas» should be «mājās» (at home). The meaning is clear everywhere, and the words about the tap and the repairman fit the situation.

To move up to B1, join your thoughts more often with «jo» and «tāpēc ka» (both mean “because”), for example «Es nevaru palikt mājās, jo man jābūt darbā» (“I can’t stay at home because I have to be at work”).

From a short text, the level can only be estimated roughly.

needs fixing not how Latvians say it could be said differently

Mistake 1 of 3 · Punctuation

Was: aizgriezt, correct: aizgriezt,

In Latvian, a comma goes before bet: aizgriezt, bet.

Mistake 2 of 3 · Not how Latvians say it

Was: rozetka, correct: rozete

Rozetka is a Russian word with a Latvian ending. In Latvian, a power socket is called rozete.

Mistake 3 of 3 · Grammar

Was: mājas, correct: mājās

To answer “where?”, you need the locative plural: mājās. Without the mark over the letter (garumzīme), mājas is a different form: it does not mean “at home”.

Other ways to say it

You can leave this sentence as it is. Here are other ways to say it:

  • simpler, less risk of a mistakeLūdzu, atsūtiet meistaru rīt no rīta.The word «lūdzu» (“please”) makes the request polite, and the sentence itself is shorter. It works when you want to write briefly and simply.
  • sounds more naturalVai rīt no rīta varētu atnākt meistars? In a request like this, Latvians often do not say who will send the repairman. Instead they ask whether he can come tomorrow morning, and that sounds gentle.
  • more advanced, for level B2Vai jūs varētu rīt no rīta atsūtīt meistaru, lai viņš salabotu krānu un rozeti? The word «lai» (“so that”) adds a purpose: to get the tap and the socket fixed. That way one sentence shows both the request and its purpose.

How much would you pay for three months of checks?

One payment, no subscription. If someone else pays for you, choose “Not sure yet”. This is only a survey, nothing is for sale yet.

Which exam are you taking?

Questions

How do you rate a letter?

We look at five things: whether all points of the task are covered, whether the text has the form the task asks for (for example, the letter has a greeting and a goodbye), whether there are enough words, whether the text is connected and whether it is easy to understand despite the mistakes. Each one gets one point, so you see “4 out of 5”. This is our estimate for practice, not exam points.

Why does the writing part matter so much?

The exam has four parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking. In each one you need at least 9 points out of 15. If you get less than 9 for writing, you fail the whole exam (MK noteikumi Nr. 157, point 47). According to the head of VISC, writing is the part people fail most often (LSM, 2023).

Which tasks can I check?

Writing tasks in the format of the VIAA exam. At A1 this is a short message, at A2 a letter that follows a plan, and a description of a person, at B1 a letter and a comment, at B2 a formal letter and a “for and against” text. Exercises where you put a word into the right form will come later.

You can also check your own text without a task. We underline the mistakes and explain them.

Who checks the text?

Our own algorithms together with artificial intelligence. In rare cases a mistake is possible, so we give an explanation with every correction: if you are in doubt, it is easy to check it again.

What about the speaking part and levels C1 and C2?

Not yet. We only check the writing part of levels A1, A2, B1 and B2.
